On a very fine day in the park a good try out of the system on 310MHz was possible including Alan mobile with the test transmitter to and from Kaiti Hill. A second receiver was available and this allowed everyone to try tracking a person wearing one of the transmitter pendants. Much was learnt about use of the receivers and aerials and several amateurs are keen to have a fox hunt soon on 2 meters which will provide even more expertise in this field

Ian, Peter and myself have removed the aerials from Basil's tower so it can be lowered. Henry has dismantled and removed aerials and equipment from Rob's station. Ross has supplied the paperwork on known silent keys in this area to NZART so corrections may be made to the MED records and thus the next call book. More examples of assistance to local amateurs provided by branch members Please note that changes of address to the MED are the responsibility of the amateur concerned

AREC have been asked to have trained operators available for using
radio location equipment used for tracking lost persons. A small radio
transmitter is attached to people who are likely to wonder off and get
lost. Each transmitter is on a different frequency and Search and
Rescue have purchased a tracker.
All interested persons are welcome to meet at Anzac Park at 1.30pm on
Sunday 30th of October to try out the tracker and run tests.
The club also hopes to run some hidden transmitter hunts now
the weather is finer

A beautiful day for the rally. Difficult to get up at six but home by eleven to listen to the radio traffic from the later stages. HF gave good usage for the first stages and later a portable repeater was heard in use. The local repeaters at least in the early stages were mainly used as backup and were especially useful during the set up of the HF station The set up at the rally start, six stages with many of the local amateurs assisting the Hawkes Bay amateurs who were responsible for the rally comms which also involved portable repeaters and which should provide good experience for the week long North Island rally next year for those who will be involved |

A very interesting and enjoyable weekend. Arnie was there setting up well before the rest of us, making sure no one went hungry and was able to provide much information about the area. Alan brought a trailer with the generator (not needed) and a two element 20 meter beam. Rolly showed his experience in AREC by bringing all that might be needed much of which I never would have thought of . Peter had his very well engineered support mast and together with Arnie's UHF and 80 meters aerials and Alan's beam a very impressive aerial set up. (pictures to follow) Saturday was wet but Sunday was fine apart from a cold wind however the facilities were all that were needed and I think no one was cold or went hungry as everyone seemed to have brought enough for a week and there was no shortage of gear. A very hospitable place to hold a branch event and much thanks to Ross for arranging it and the station staff for making it available.

Peter has a fox hunting / directional finding transmitter control kit he obtained from overseas and built up. This allows remote control of the transmitter thus allowing, amongst other controls, the reduction or increase of transmission times as required during the hunt He has interfaced it to a Icom portable 2 meter rig to operate as a fox / hidden transmitter. When the weather is better the plan is to have this hidden somewhere in Gisborne in a public place for club members to have a fox hunt on 2 meters. No definite plans on the actual frequency at present but several club members are keen and are looking up or building suitable equipment. Note the fox is a hidden low powered transmitter and no animals are involved in spite of the name There are now believed to be fifteen financial members of the club. Hopefully the letter sent out by the treasurer will result in more additional members. The secretary has applied for and obtained the call sign ZL2LEC for the Mahia trip. It lasts for four months and is the same as when the club went to East Cape but now the EC stands for East Coast.

The visit to the Fire Station to see the new Command Vehicle was well attended in spite of the weather. The new vehicle is most impressive with what appears to be every possible form of communication and everything else that could be needed. Generators, masts, satellite dish, internet displays all well interconnected are only some of the facilities. A bonus was the additional display of some of the equipment now used in fire fighting etc. Also very impressive. Thanks must go to the secretary for arranging the visit and the members of the Fire Service for their time and efforts to make the visit so impressive and informative Several members have been to Mahia to check on the possible club station for the lighthouse activity. From all accounts a good day was had by all and every thing looks good for a enjoyable club activity including location and facilities. Contact was was also made with other amateurs in the area. Plans are for a special call sign and an impressive pictorial QSL card. With more club members in areas south of Gisborne the repeaters are getting more use and use of IRLP around 7.30pm on Sunday allows members from out of Gisborne to take part on the club net on 680.
